This is a photo of the Jubilee tower, on top of Moel Famau near my home in North Wales, as I usually see it in the twilight of a new day.
Climbing up Moel Famau in the pre-dawn light is a marvellous experience, watching as the sky comes to life as the sun's rays light the upper atmosphere and clouds before finally appearing over the eastern horizon and bathing the gently undulating land in golden light.
The slopes of Moel Famau are home to a breeding population of rare black grouse, and in early spring you can hear them making really wierd mating calls and, if you're very blessed, you can see the males putting on a courtship display in the specially provided reks, burnt into the heather on the hillside.
It takes about 45 minutes to walk to the top of Moel Famau, without stopping for photography, so a full trip up and down, with photos at the top, can take around two hours.
I can't think of a better way of spending the first two hours of the day than being out experiencing the sheer beauty of what God has created, in the solitude that comes with a pre-dawn excursion.
