A climb up the flanks of Moel Famau to the ruined Jubilee Tower at the top is one of my more pleasurable forms of exercise, but carting a fully loaded LowePro up there certainly increases the effort required to reach the top.
Never mind though, as the stump of the tower makes for a dramatic photographic subject when the light's right.
On this occasion the setting sun was sidelighting the stonework and foreground detail, bringing out all that lovely texture that old castles and monuments have plenty of.
But in colour the image was far too jolly, and didn't convey the brooding atmosphere and history of this often violent border country.
So a conversion to monochrome was on the cards, which certainly helped in changing the mood of this image into something much more in keeping with how this ruined tower makes me feel every time I visit.
