One thing that Liz and I found during our holiday in Schladming, Austria, was that clear evenings were very hard to come by. I should have known I guess, coming from North Wales where the mountains gather clouds like a magnet, that this would be the case in the Dachstein region.
So imagine my delight on this evening when we had driven up to the top of the Planai, our 'local' mountain and home of the forthcoming womens' downhill winter Olympics, to find clear skies over the Dachstein Massiv and a beautiful afterglow following the setting sun.
This is a photo that almost took itself, with a very simple composition of horizonatal bands following the rule of thirds.
What gives me enjoyment in it are the transitions from dark to light, and from monochrome to full colour as the eye moves up the frame. Simple, but entrancing.
