The story behind this image

This view of the Snowdon horseshoe, in Snowdonia, North Wales was taken from one of the most popular viewing spots, just off the road that runs from Capel Curig to Beddgelert.

I've stopped here many times to admire the view, but, until this occasion, I'd never been able to take a satisfactory photo.

To me, a satisfactory photo is one that conveys the meaning of a place, rather than just a record of how it looked when I pressed the shutter, and I'd failed to achieve such an image despite many visits to this spot.

However, on this occasion the storm cumulus clouds were racing across the sky, bathing the land in living light and bringing out the majesty and drama of the mountains.

I took photos constantly during the five minutes or so that the light show lasted for, and this is my favourite, with the band of light mimicing the ridgeline of the mountains.

Finally - an expressive image of a place that deserves to be seen as is should be - in glorious flamboyant light!
