For me, a good 'grand' landscape image is where the sky and land (and sea if there is any) work together in a complimentary fashion, with each element contributing to the whole.
The inclusion of a cloud in the image can be particularly beneficial, such as here in this photo of one of the peaks of the Dachstein Massiv in central Austria.
This is a composition of contrasts. The monolithic limestone set against the fluidity of the cloud. The highly saturated colours in the rocks and blue sky set against the white and grey vapour.
In this case I made sure there was breathing room around the cloud as it's important to treat clouds with as much care as more static elements in the composition, and to make sure that they are positioned correctly and not clipped or strangled by tight borders.
