Sitting out late one night on the balcony of our hotel room in Schladming, Austria, Liz and I were suprised to see two pinpoints of light high up on the Dachstein Massiv, about 10 miles away.
It turns out that these were 'Alpen hutte', old refuges high in the mountains now used as way station refreshment stops for people with serious climbing to do.
To me they were a poignant reminder of the power of light, especially of light in dark places, bringing hope and the promise of rescue and rest.
Although these lights were only pinpricks in the surrounding darkness they were visible for miles, and the darkness couldn't quench them. In fact, the darkness only served to make them appear brighter.
In that moment I was drawn to the Gospel of John in the New Testament, where John says of Jesus 'The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it'.
