The weather was turning stormy in the North Sea as we sailed out of Kirkwall, the capital town of the Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland.
Standing on the upper deck of the P&O liner Azura gave me a dramatic view of the unfolding coastline, and an especially good view of the lighthouse at the entrance to the bay.
I'd already taken many photos of the lighthouse (I love lighthouses!) as we sailed towards it, but then the Kirkwall pilot boat emerged from around the headland, arriving in just the right spot at just the right time for me to capture this image.
A much more harmonious and visually pleasing composition than my previous photos of just the lighthouse on its own.
