Where can you get the best ariel view of Paris? From the top of the Eiffel Tower?
No!
The problem with going up the Eiffel Tower, apart from the huge queues and high cost, is that when you get to the top you can't actually see the most important monument in Paris, the Eiffel Tower itself. Duh.
Actually, the best place for a high altitude view of Paris is the Tour Montparnasse.
Situated south of the river Seine in a less glamorous area of Paris, this huge office block is almost universally hated by parisians, but for tourists it's great as there is a panoramic viewing roof from which you can look out over the whole of Paris (haze permitting), including a view of the Eiffel Tower.
Add to that a relatively cheap price for admission, use of the express elevator, and no queues and what's not to like?
The only problem I had was that Liz and I went up at midday, so the views were very hazy and poorly lit - not good for photography.
But next time I'll be up there at sunset to capture the views in good light.
The view from the bottom of the tour, looking up, wasn't half bad though.
