Getting near the end of our holiday in Austria, Liz and I were worn out with all the climbing and hiking so we decided to take a local stroll along the river in Schladming, where we were staying.
The river walk was really nice, with lovely scenery as we climbed gently through a wooded gorge which was part of the 'Wilde Wasser' trail, alongside the foaming river as it cascaded over rocks and fallen tree trunks.
Along the trail there were several small feeder streams coming down the side of the gorge, and in these trickling brooks local artisans had made a series of delightful water features, mostly featuring small water wheels driving wooden hammers up and down onto small blocks, again made of wood.
There was no discernable purpose to these little wooden sculptures, other than to amuse and entertain passers by, and Liz and I were entranced by the whimsical nature of these little works of art as we strolled happily along.
Typical Austria, where taking care over little details seems to matter so much.
