The story behind this image

An overcast, drizzley day on the Dingle Peninsula on Ireland's west coast, and Liz and I are out exploring one of the many beauty spots we remembered from a previous holiday long ago.

This particular beauty spot is Clogher Strand, a small west facing beach with a lovely view of the Blasket islands just 3km off shore.

Except that it's not particularly beautiful today, and the Blasket islands are invisible in the sea of cloud and mist hanging over us.

Still, a bracing stroll along the beach brought us to this wonderful rocky outcrop, shale I think, fractured into fantastic blocky shapes and embedded with fossilised coral.

The range of colours in the shale was very eye-catching too, ranging from blues to rusty reds as minerals constantly leached out and oxidised in the salt-laden air.

There's no way I could have photographed these features and colours in with the sun shining, as the contrast would have been too great to record the details and the rich colours would have been washed out. However, the overcast conditions were perfect for capturing these mini-landscapes.

If you look hard, you can see the spots of rain that that just started to fall when I took this photo, after which we beat a hasty retreat to the car and then the nearest cafe.
