The story behind this image

These fossilised pieces of coral are to be found in plain view embedded in the rocks at Clogher Strand, a small beach on the Dingle Peninsula on Ireland's rugged west coast.

A dizzly day (not uncommon) proved ideal for photographing these fine details, which would have been lost in the higher contrast of bright sunlight.

Another benefit of gloomy skies for this type of photography is that the colours in the rocks are so much richer and highly saturated than when in direct sunlight.

Mind you, the rest of my family, sitting on the beach, didn't share my enthusiam for the conditions!
