During our two week stay in Colorado, spent exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park, my wife Liz and I saw some amazing scenery, and ranked pretty near the top of our 'WOW' list were the views of the high mountain peaks that we saw while driving the Trail Ridge Road.
The Trail Ridge Road is the highest paved road in the United States, topping out at over 12,000 feet above sea level, and driving it was a breathtaking experience, both literally and figuratively!
We pulled over to admire and photograph this view at pretty near the road's highest point, and needless to say we didn't venture too far in the cold, thin air.
There were a few high cumulus clouds in the sky at the time, whose shadows were playing over the landscape, resulting in a lovely chiaroscuro effect on the peaks.
Once back home in North Wales in the rich, thick air at sea level, I decided to convert this photo to monochrome.
I wanted to emphasise the light/dark contrasts in the scene, and the presence of colour proved a distraction from that effect so it had to go.
