The story behind this image

When my wife Liz and I were planning our holiday to the United States one of her 'must see' criteria was fall colours.

High on my list of priorities were mountains and lakes, so the Rocky Mountain National Park at the end of September was the obvious place to go.

Neither of us were disappointed, and most of the time we got to see mountains, lakes and the glorious autumn colours of aspens and cottonwood trees all at the same time.

One of our favourite locations for looking at and photographing the colours was Bear Lake and its surrounding trails, and we re-visited this area multiple times during our two week stay.

An early morning vigil by the lakeside was rewarded by this stunning reflection under rare, mirror calm conditions, with a vibrant patch of aspens glowing golden in the just risen sun.
