Towards the end of our two week holiday spent exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park, my wife Liz and I took a nostalgic hike around one of the loveliest (and easiest) trails we had previously walked - the Bear Lake Trail.
Reasonably enough this trail takes you around the shores of Bear Lake, but while our previous hikes here had been under a blue autumn sky with the aspen trees in their vivid fall colours, this hike was conducted under an overcast sky, with most of the leaves now fallen to the ground.
There was a distinctly different feel to the area, with the onset of snow now just a few days away and everything slowing down for the winter hibernation.
But here and there, hidden amongst the rocks by the side of the trail, the more hardy plants and bushes were still holding out in their autumn finery.
This little bush, with vivid red leaves, was beautifully placed against a crack in the rocks, and the overcast sky helped bring out the lovely colour without too much glare reducing the saturation.
The little glare that was apparent was soon removed using my polarising filter, allowing the vivid red to come to the fore.
