One of the most interesting and varied hikes that my wife Liz and I enjoyed during our two week stay in the Rocky Mountain National Park was that which took us from the Glacier Park Trailhead, up to Alberta Falls and beyond to Mills Lake.
On the way up I noticed this wonderfully fractured rock face, multi hued with the patina of leached elements and with a couple of highly improbable bushes somehow clinging into the fissures.
I didn't stop to photograph the scene on the way up the trail, as the sun was shining and there was too much contrast across the rock face to allow the lovely detail and colour to be seen clearly.
But I made a mental note, and on the way back down to the trailhead, now under overcast skies, we stopped for a few minutes' rest and to capture a view of this fascinating geology in all its glory.
