The story behind this image

One of the many things I loved doing during Liz's and my two week holiday in Estes Park, Colorado, was driving along the roads in the Rocky Mountain National Park.

There aren't many roads in the park, but what is lacking in quantity is more than made up for in quality.

I reckon the twenty dollars we paid for a seven day vehicle pass was the best enjoyment factor per dollar that I've ever known, especially as the fee included free use of the park's fleet of hybrid shuttle buses.

The Rocky Mountain National Park trailheads are very popular, especially in late September when the golden colours of autumn are on full display, and unless you arrive at your chosen trailhead by around 8am you'll not find any parking places left.

Hence the brilliant park and ride shuttle bus system, which Liz and I used extensively during our park excursions.

In fact, we used the buses to cheat a bit by riding to the highest trailhead at Bear Lake and then hiking mostly downhill to a lower altitude trailhead to catch the bus back to our car.

This method certainly beat slogging uphill in the thin mountain air!

So this image is my homage to the wonderful shuttle buses, and their drivers, of the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Shot on the Bear Lake Road, with the wonderful colours of aspens in the fall as a backdrop, I deliberately used a slow shutter speed to take the picture in order to allow the passing bus to blur a little, adding a sense of movement and dynamism to the scene.
