If you were to ask me what colours I now associate with Arizona, following our holiday in Sedona, I would have to say 'red, green and blue'.
Red for the sandstone (it's really red), green for the trees and other vegetation, which I wasn't expecting in what I thought would be a dried up brown desert, and blue for the vivid colour of the sky, especially when viewed through a polarising filter.
This photo, taken on our hike along the West Fork of Oak Creek, shows two of these colours in stark contrast. What you can also see in this image is something called 'desert varnish', which comprises the vertical bands staining the red standstone.
