Tramping around the mountains of Snowdonia in North Wales is one of the delights of life, especially if you like slate!
I had booked a day off work in order to climb one of my favourite peaks, Moel Siabod, and hopefully capture some great photos showing sweeping panoramas of mountain peaks receding off into the distance.
However, on the day, there was so much haze that I was struggling to see the top of the mountain I was climbing up, let alone the surrounding peaks, so those plans for epic scenic photography had to be modified into something more achievable given the conditions.
Hence the slate, which abounds on the mountains of the region, and provides endless variations of shape, texture and hue.
Adorned by colourful lichens, which only flourish in pure air, these mini-landscapes can be just as attractive as the larger scenes, and are just as evocative of the North Wales landscape as the more usual mountains, forests and lakes.
I photographed this particular example as I passed along the shores of the beautiful Llyn Foel, halfway up Siabod.
