Little did my wife Liz and I know when we set off to West Kirby on the Wirral for a walk around the marine lake, what a spectacular visual treat we were in for.
The weather forecast was hopeful, with a clearing front promising some nice clouds around sunset. At least it wasn't going to rain on us.
As we walked the mile or so around the lake with the sun dipping towards the horizon we noticed the clouds to the west starting to glow in the low angled light.
The extraordinary glow just kept getting more and more pronounced as the sun sank lower and lower towards the sea.
Normally in this part of the world the sun would just disappear into a bank of clag above the horizon and nothing more would happen, but on this evening the horizon was perfectly clear out over Colwyn Bay and I watched and photographed in awe as the sun kissed the sea and then sank gracefully over the horizon behind the massive Colwyn Bay windfarm, standing in stark silhouette against the fiery ball and irridescent clouds.
What an evening!
The only annoying thing was that my wife was happily snapping away on her smartphone, taking pretty decent photos of the sunset and uploading them directly to Facebook for all our friends to admire in real time.
I'd like to think a huge lens and PhotoShop resulted in a better image, but sometimes I wonder!
