The story behind this image

My wife Liz and I took a winter break on Tenerfie, the largest of the Canary Islands during February 2017 and spent most of our time touring around the Teide National Park in order to marvel at the astonishing volcanic geology from which the island is formed.

Not quite knowing what to expect we ended up stopping at every roadside viewpoint, getting fabulous views of the volcano Mount Teide and the inside of the huge original caldera.

We ended up at one of the most popular spots, the Mirador Llano de Ucanca, taking in views of the Roques de Garcia including the best known formation, Roque Cinchado, pictured here.

In colour, the image was reasonably striking, but I decided to convert to monochrome, rendering the blue sky almost black and the red rock almost white to add a surrealistic twist that suited the slightly Dali-easque nature of the scenery.
