The story behind this image

High above the beaches and resorts of Tenerife's coastline lies the other-wordly volcanic landscape of the Teide National Park.

Dominated by the 12,000ft high cone of Mount Teide, which tends to draw the eye somewhat, nevertheless there's plenty of colourful and shapely volcanic features to enjoy apart from the mountain itself.

During Liz's and my week long winter break on the island we made two full day excursions up to the National Park, just amazed at the scale and substance of the scenery laid out before us.

On our first trip up there we stopped at the wonderfully named 'Zapato de La Reina' viewpoint and had a bite to eat before having a wander round the tracks leading towards some volcanic upwellings.

It was there that we came across this rock formation, shaped like a woman's high heeled shoe and nicely backlit against a higher ridge in the background.

Mind you, this wasn't the only unusally shaped rock we came across in the caldera of Mount Teide!
