The story behind this image

High above the beaches and resorts of Tenerife's coastline lies the other-wordly volcanic landscape of the Teide National Park.

Dominated by the 12,000ft high cone of Mount Teide, which tends to draw the eye somewhat, nevertheless there's plenty of colourful and shapely volcanic features to enjoy apart from the mountain itself.

During Liz's and my week long winter break on the island we made two full day excursions up to the National Park, just amazed at the scale and substance of the scenery laid out before us.

On our first trip up to the park we spotted bands of vivid turquoise coloured rock by the side of the road, just near to the Parador de Canadas del Teide hotel, so we stopped in a convenient layby for a closer look.

The combination of blue sky, red and turquoise rock and a foreground of dead vegetation proved too good to resist, so I quickly composed and took this image as a reminder of the delightful coloured rocks, spewed out from the bowels of the earth.
