Stunted tree growing out of volcanic rock in the Teide National Park on Tenerife in the Canary Islands

The story behind this image

I think that I shall never see - a thing as lovely as a tree.

Especially when said tree seems to be the only living vegetation in the other-worldly volcanic landscape at the extraordinary Minas de San Jose in Tenerife's Teide National Park.

Of all the places in Tenerife that Liz and I explored during our week long winter break in the Canary Islands, it was high up in the ancient caldera of the volcano Mount Teide that we spend the most time, making two full day excursions to this visual wonderland.

Stopping to explore at Minas de San Jose, I was very surprised to find this stunted tree, clinging to life perched on the edge of a cliff of volcanic rock in a seemgly waterless wilderness.

So naturally enough I made it the focal point of this photo.

I wonder, if we return in a few years, whether or not it will still be there?
