A stiffish climb up the slopes of my local hill, Moel Famau, just as the sun is rising into a clear blue sky reveals a scene of devastation as vast swathes of forest have been chopped down for wood pulp.
Scattered around are the broken remains of dead branches and tree stumps, already whitening, and bringing to mind a mass grave of dead bones.
At the corner of this field of death stands a lone, broken tree, split down the middle and, for some unknown reason, left as a solitary sentinel bearing witness to what has gone before.
The sun rises above a layer of cloud, and for a few brief moments, bathes the scene in golden light, bringing a poignant beauty to this lonely, broken survivor.
