A late afternoon sun filters green and gold through the autumn foliage as Liz and I pick our way through the woods that line the banks of Thirlemere, one of the Lake District's hidden jewels.
Ahead of us, the path is interrupted by a gate, the only man-made artifact in our surroundings, and we're left wondering what's beyond and where the path will lead us.
From a photography point of view, I'm always on the lookout for the curious juxtaposition, and this gate was an ideal example.
The gate is made of straight lines, when all around is bendy nature and the gate is black while everywhere else the colours of autumn dominate.
So although it's only a small part of the overall scene, it's the gate that makes this image work.
