I photographed this group of young trees in snow at Loggerheads Country Park, just a short drive from where I live and thus easy to get to when the weather is doing interesting things.
Although it had snowed, the sky on this occasion was overcast, so perfect for some photography in the woods while keeping the contrast range of the scene within what the digital sensor on my Canon 5D could cope with.
I've always struggled to photograph more than one tree at at time, as making a meaningful composition out of a jumble of trunks and branches I find quite challenging.
Such was the case here, and eventually I concentrated on the trunks of some trees which formed a 'V' shape running from foreground to background. Even so I think this particular composition is right on the limit of coherence.
During post processing in Photoshop I tried a monochrome version to see if that would help define the image better, but it didn't. In fact the image lost a lot of its appeal and meaning in monocrome, so after a lot of careful experimenting (playing around to you and me!) I settled on this heavily desaturated version, retaining just a hint of colour in the tree trunks.
The more I look at this image, the more it's growing on me. It may even be worth printing and framing - we'll see if it continues its appeal over time.
