The 'beast from the east' weather system that afflicted the UK in early spring 2018 resulted in some dramatic winter-like scenes, especially in the mountains of Snowdonia near my home in North Wales.
So as soon as the roads were passable my wife Liz and I headed for the mountains to enjoy the magnificent views and hopefully capture a few meaningful photographs on the way.
One spot where there is an abundance of scenery is the area around Llyn Ogwen and the Nant Ffrancon Valley, and this particular image was taken about 1/3rd of the way down Nant Ffrancon from the Ogwen visitors centre, looking back towards the head of the valley with its large waterfall, to the snow capped peak of Tryfan outlined against the treatening skies.
My only problem in capturing this scene was the extreme contrast range between the bright sky and snow at the top of the frame, and the much darker rocks and grasses in the foreground.
So I took five exposures, each one stop apart, for a subsequent HDR blend in Adobe Lightroom.
This is a great tool for such scenes, where the use of a neutral density graduated filter would be a problem due to the uneven horizon, and gives a really pleasing and natural looking final image.
