Venice, Italy. One of the most popular and most photographed tourist destinations in the world, and rightly so.
But as usual with these old European cities, developed long before the advent of motorised transport, if you take just a few paces away from the main tourists strips you enter another world of seamy narrow back alleys, in complete contrast to the holiday companys' brochures.
You may not find any normal tourists in this part of town, but it can a photographers paradise, especially if you have a penchant for decay like what I have!
This alleyway, with its layers of posters and lovely diffuse overhead lighting, was just the ticket for me, having got frustrated trying to take a decent photo of the nearby Rialto Bridge.
I could take my time and do a good job, tripod mounted and with multiple exposures to capture all the tonal range I was seeing, without fighting with CoolPix wielding hoards.
Beauty is where you find it I say, and sometimes you can find it in the most unlikely places.
