The view from the top of the clock tower in St Mark's Square, Venice, makes it well worth paying the few euros entrance fee. Liz and I had wanted toget to the top during the day, but the queues were long and the sun was too hot to be standing around waiting.
So we decided to come back later once the queues had lessened and the temperature had dropped.
I'm glad to say our plan worked, and we got to the top of the tower with minimum fuss just in time to witness a rather good sunset out of the west window.
Once the sun had set most of the other tourists at the top of the tower lost interest and made for the elevator, but Liz and I stayed, knowing that quite often the best light comes after sunset.
Well we weren't disappointed, as the twilight glow from the sky enveloped the city in a blanket of soft contrast, diffuse lighting that brought out all the fine detail and subtle nuances in the roofs of the buildings below us.
This particular view looks east, out over the domes of St Mark's Basilica (complete with scaffolding as usual), with a monochrome conversion that enhances the quiet mood of the scene.
And if you're wondering, that tower in the background really is leaning over, it's not lens distortion that you're seeing!
