The story behind this image

Along the 'Wilde Wasser' trail as it climbs alongside the river which flows through the town of Schladming, Austria, you'll find numerous little mini-landscapes along the rivet bank, such as this tiny waterfall, all of two feet high.

Liz and I could have been in Snowdonia there was so much greenery and water around as we made our way up the gorge as it wound from Schaldming to Rohrmoos.

What initially attracted me to this particular little scene was the vivid green of the mosses and lichens that were thriving in the damp condiitons by this trickle of water.

However, when I came to look at this photo again, for inclusion here at goHOWiE.com, I realised that what made the scene special wasn't the colour, but rather the play of water through the scene.

I tried to make the image work in colour, but the most important feature, the water, was lost against the vivid background.

In order to make this image work something had to go, and in the end I decided that the water was better emphasised by converting the scene to monochrome, darkening the background and lightening the water, so that's what I did.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice one element of a picture in order to bring out the true meaning of what you're looking to convey to the viewer.
