The southwest of Ireland certainly has its fair share of dramatic coastline, and my wife Liz and I spent a happy week exploring some of the beauties of this area during April 2017.
Based at Youghal in County Cork, our travels took us as far as Roaring Water Bay (great name!) to the west, and up into the Comeragh Mountains to the east.
Studying maps of the area, in conjunction with my ever useful Photographer's Ephemeris app, enabled me to plan some sunset timelapse shoots taking in some of the most amazing landscapes this area has to offer.
First on my list of 'go to' sunset locations was Roches Point, featured in this video.
Roches Point is at the entrance to Cork harbour, and boasts panoramic views around the convoluted bay, taking in Roches Point lighthouse and the lights of Cork to the northwest.
Liz and I arrived a Roches Point about an hour before sunset, and I must admit to some vacillation, not knowing in which direction to point my camera as the views were amazing in every direction.
In the end I cheated and started off this time lapse sequence by photographing the sunset to the northwest over the harbour, and then once the sun had set dramatically into a bank of cloud I turned my camera through 90° and started filming the lighthouse and cottages as natural light bled from the sky to be replaced by the shining beacon of the lighthouse and the few lights from the cottages close by.
A stunning start to a fantastic week in a beautiful part of the world.
