Where to go to see a decent sunset on Tenerife?
One of the best spots is the Mirador Chipeque on the east side of the Teide National Park, looking westwards towards the imposing cone of Mount Teide itself and with a view out over Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast of the island.
So after having spent a day exploring the seaside towns of the north, my wife Liz and I headed up the TF-24 from San Cristobel de La Laguna into the National Park, aiming to arrive at Chipeque well before sunset, in order to enjoy a picnic tea while my camera did the work of recording the 1,400+ images needed to create just a few seconds of time lapse.
And it was a good job we arrived early, as soon after we'd parked and I'd set up my camera in a favourable spot, the locals started arriving in droves to witness the same spectacle as us.
Once the sun had set, however, most drifted away, but we stayed, as I wanted to catch the twilight colours fading to night as the lights of the town far below us glowed ever brighter in the gathering darkness.
And finally it was time to pack up and continue our journey back to our resort on the south coast, driving through the other-worldly volcanic landscape surrounding Mount Teide, stopping to marvel at the myriad stars visible in the inky blackness of this dark skies region.
What a way to spend an evening, in awe and wonder at the beauty of God's creation.
