The late afternoon winter sun was grazing the landscape with its low angled light as my wife Liz and I arrived at our chosen viewpoint overlooking the magnificent Mount Teide volcano, high up in the Teide National Park in the centre of Tenerife.
Exploring the volcanic landscapes around Teide is always one of the highlights of our winter sun breaks in the Canary Islands, and the scenery never ceases to take our breath away.
But on this occasion I had a photographic objective in mind, wanting to shoot this time lapse sequence of the shadows from the setting sun slowly creeping up the flanks of the mountain.
And I wasn't disappointed, with the crisp, clear light at 7,000 feet altitude clearly delineating the peaks and troughs of the volcanic lava flows on the slopes of Mount Teide.
All too soon the final burst of direct light vanished from Teide's peak, and it was time to head over to the visitors' centre just across the road for a much needed cup of coffee before returning to film the milky way.
But that's another story.
