The story behind this image

For my wife Liz and I, a holiday in England's Lake District just wouldn't be complete without a visit to the charming Ashness Bridge, just above Derwent Water.

Of course, the main attraction here is the old stone packhorse bridge itself, but on emerging from the National Trust car park it isn't the bridge that catches your eye first, but this wonderful old stone cottage, set against a backdrop of trees and hills.

So I always make a point of stopping and photographing the cottage on my way to Ashness Bridge itself, just a few yards downriver.

But on this occasion towards the end of July 2020 I had a bit of a problem in that the contrast range of the scene, from the brightest part of the sky to the deepest shadow, was way too much for my camera's sensor to cope with, so I ended up taking five separate exposures, each one stop apart, for a subsequent HDR blend in Adobe Lightroom.
