Stepping off the road through Maeshafn, near my home in Mold, North Wales, and starting along the public footpath alongside the river Alyn is like entering another dimension.
A stillness descends as the sounds of the modern world fade away, to be replaced by the sussurant burble of water flowing over rocks and the melodic warble of birdsong in the canopy above.
Stretching out before us along our path is a fulsome carpet of wild garlic, just coming into flower and filling the air with a heady, unmistakable fragrance while the high branches of the trees above our heads sway and rustle in the fitful breeze.
My wife Liz and I feel like we've stepped into a fairytale as we make our way through these enchanted woods, or maybe a scene from 'Lord of the Rings'.
What an amazing experience, and only a short drive from the hustle and bustle of town.
No doubt we'll be back to enjoy this amazing place as the seasons roll around.
