The blasted reddish lava landscape of the volcanic cone of Mount Teide, at the centre of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, stands out in stark relief against the deep blue sky at an altitude of nearly 12,000 feet above sea level.
My wife Liz and I are puffing and panting our way around the cinder paths leading from the upper station of the Teleferico del Teide cablecar, just a few hundred feet below Mount Tiede's crater.
The views from up here take your breath away (as does the lack of oxygen!), and you could be forgiven you'd landed on Mars, the surroundings are so out of this world.
A few hardy souls hiked all the way to the crater, in the company of a guide, but Liz and I were quite content to look at and photograph Mount Teide from where we were!
