No, this isn't a photo from NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover!
Although I did think I'd landed on another planet as Liz and I drove our little hire car up beyond Tenerife's cloud pine forest and out into the Teide National Park, high up in the centre of the island.
Formed long ago from the eruption of the huge Las Canadas volcano, the park encompasses its massive caldera, with the more recently formed Mount Teide volcano at its centre.
Everywhere you look there's stark barren landscapes and fields of cooled lava, especially so around Mount Teide itself, as pictured here and featuring a volcanic vent with lava spew just below the main crater.
That must have been something to see when it erupted!
